The geometry of the lounge: how the sofa shapes relationships and spaces

When we design a lounge, the sofa is not simply one of the pieces of furniture placed within the setting. Very often, it is the element everything else starts from.

Its position determines where people will stop, what their gaze will be directed towards, how naturally a conversation can begin and which circulation routes will remain free around the lounge area.

For this reason, when we choose a sofa from the ELE light catalogue, we do not look only at style, colour or material. Above all, we consider the geometry it can generate and the type of relationship it can create between people.

A lounge starts with relationships

Two sofas can occupy a similar footprint and still create completely different environments.

Placed opposite one another, they create a more intimate setting in which people are naturally encouraged to face each other and talk. Positioned in the same direction, on the other hand, the lounge can be oriented towards a stage, a presentation, a view or a scenic focal point.

The scale of the furniture also changes the result. A compact piece such as the Seattle Sofa, for example, makes it possible to create several small clusters within a larger setting, generating different conversation areas without introducing an overly dominant presence.

The point, therefore, is not simply how many people can sit down, but how we want them to relate to one another.

Its compact format makes it possible to distribute several conversation areas within the same environment, keeping the lounge open and easy to move through.

Repetition creates geometry

The shape of a lounge does not necessarily have to come from one single statement piece. It can also be created through repetition and through the relationship between several seating elements.

Sofas, chaise longues and poufs can define an area without the need for walls or physical partitions. By changing their orientation and the distance between them, we can create a more intimate sitting area, leave one side open towards the rest of the event, or build several groups within the same zone.

The Adelaide White Sofa works particularly well in this type of composition. Used together with other elements from the same range, it makes it possible to work with coordinated volumes while maintaining a consistent visual language even when the arrangement changes.

In this case, geometry does not depend on the distinctive shape of one sofa, but rather on the way several elements are placed in relation to one another.

Sofa, chaise longue and pouf can create several clusters while maintaining visual continuity, allowing the arrangement itself to define circulation and relationships.

Defining an area without closing it off

The geometry of a lounge is not determined only by what we see in plan. The height of the furniture also has a significant impact on how the environment is perceived.

A low seat allows the eye to travel across the setting and makes it possible to distinguish one area without creating a real visual barrier. At an event, this can be particularly useful when we want to maintain continuity between different areas or preserve views towards the rest of the setting.

The Black Daybed, with its strongly horizontal form, can perform exactly this function. Its presence creates a clear line, while its low height keeps the environment visually open.

The seat therefore becomes a kind of soft boundary: it separates functions without truly separating people.

Daybed within the event setting

Its low height makes it possible to define a lounge area without interrupting visual continuity, maintaining an open relationship with the rest of the event setting.

The distance between sofas is part of the design

The shape of the sofa, however, is only part of the equation. What truly creates a lounge is the relationship between one element and another.

Sofas positioned too far apart can make conversation feel less natural; placed too close together, they can reduce circulation and create a sense of overcrowding. Coffee tables, armchairs and poufs must also become part of the composition while maintaining the right balance between occupied and empty areas.

For this reason, we never start simply from the number of seats to be included. We start from the people: how many will use the area, how we imagine them moving through it and what type of interaction we want to encourage.

A lounge should not simply be full. It should be clear, accessible and natural to use.

From the sofa to the composition

This is where the catalogue becomes a design tool.

A compact sofa can help us create several smaller sitting areas. Repeating different elements can generate a geometry and define circulation routes. A low, horizontal seat can distinguish one zone while keeping sightlines open.

Different products are therefore not simply aesthetic alternatives. They are different ways of organising the setting and creating relationships.

When we design a lounge, choosing the sofa also means deciding what should happen around it: where people will meet, what they will look towards, how easily they can enter and leave the group, and how that area will relate to the rest of the event.

It is in this transition that a single piece of furniture stops being simply a product in the catalogue and becomes part of the geometry of the event setting.
